We all get ear wax from time to time, it's important in helping to protect and keep our ears clean.
Ear wax helps to lubricate the ear, traps dirt and dust and helps to provide anti inflammatory and antibacterial properties
However a build of wax can lead to a range of annoying and sometimes uncomfortable symptoms, including:
Reduced or loss of hearing
Ringing in the ear(s) (tinnitus)
Dizziness
Pain or discomfort
Ear Microsuction
Many people have heard about ear syringing, this was often undertaken in a GP surgery by the nursing team and involved spraying warm water under pressure around the ear canal to dislodge the wax.
Technologies have changes and microsuction is now considered the gold standard of treatment. By using a gentle suction probe we can visualise the ear canal removing any wax safely. Microsuction is now the preferred method used by ear nose and throat specialists. We can use micro suction for:
Impacted wax
perforated ear drum
previous surgery or problems in the canal (where syringing is deemed unsafe)
Hearing aid users
removal of wax prior to flights
